Painter
LEE Chae is a Seoul-based painter who explores layers of time and emotion through the repeated application and removal of oil paint. Inspired by nature, his process echoes the cycles of accumulation and erasure inherent in the natural world, capturing subtle traces of gesture and material as a record of time’s passage.
"During my stay at K11 ARTUS, I felt a sense of calm, as if gently floating upon tranquil waters. The light and breeze filtering through the windows gradually transformed into a language of making. The spatial harmony of K11 ARTUS intersected with Hong Kong’s dazzling urban landscape, allowing new memories to take shape. Embraced by the harbour’s rippling waters, I sought to translate my impressions of this place onto the canvas.
The waves shimmered softly, leaving afterimages like emotions in constant flow. The movement of paint pushed by the brush—like wind becoming waves—served as a metaphor for unseen feelings. Because emotions are transparent and intangible, much like air or wind, I layered translucent fields of colour to visualise sensations that cannot be seen. The overlapping lines capture how countless experiences accumulate over time, their lingering traces converging into something vividly alive."
