Chow Yiu Fai

Award-winning writer and lyricist

Born in Hong Kong, Chow Yiu Fai received his PhD degree at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam.

Currently a Professor at the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing of Hong Kong Baptist University, Chow is an award-winning writer. He released his first lyrics in 1989. Since then he has penned more than 1,000 lyrical works for a diversity of pop artists in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. Lately, Chow has been increasingly involved in prose writing, multi-media and visual art projects. In 2023, he became the first lyricist to win the Golden Melody Awards with Cantonese work.

“11pm, where are you?”

11pm, where are you?

Already home, or still somewhere outside? However your day has treated you, however far you have travelled to, you leave home and you go home.

I owed my residency work to two departing points. First, it’s the number 11. Second, when I checked in to K11 ARTUS, the person who received me said: welcome to your new home.

I decided to record where I was at 11pm, the trajectory of my home-coming, and all the things that happened to me during that day. Thus, the 11 pieces of words.

And I thought of music – I have been writing lyrics for decades. My home-coming should be accompanied by music. I invited hirsk, and together we created 11 soundtracks with his music and my vocal rendition: this may be how home-coming sounds like.

I made 11 snapshots at the same time; hey, at 11pm, I am here.
